Woodend Children's Park

Sustainability

The Woodend Children’s Park is committed to four interlinked pillars of Environmental Sustainability:

Respect for the land

  • No trees will be removed
  • Existing trees will be maintained and protected
  • Minimise disturbances to the site & regional eco systems during construction and use of the park
  • Purchase local products and services
  • Enhance framed views using natural elements

Energy conservation

  • Use solar lighting for security purposes
  • Involve the local community in the construction of the park
  • Minimise embodied energy in construction

Landscaping solutions

  • Plant indigenous species and where possible food generating plants
  • Plant drought tolerant flora
  • Minimise erosion potential
  • Maximise and reuse the on-site all rocks and topsoil emanating from excavation works
  • Maximise the use of recycled compost, soil conditioners & mulch.
  • Use existing or create natural shading systems through planting appropriate deciduous trees, accommodating seasonal requirements (Australian Red Cedar looses its leaves in winter)
  •  Use existing or create natural wind breaks to protect the environment and its inhabitants.

Material solutions

  • Minimise embodied energy in the production of materials
  • Reuse existing, recycled or salvaged materials.
  • Modify and upgrade existing facilities
  • Minimise building materials produced from ecologically unsustainable natural recourses
  • Minimise life cycle costs through using materials and equipment requiring minimal maintenance and with maximum expected useful life
